The former Nassau Community College president has died.
Sean Fanelli, who served as president of the college for more than 27 years, passed away at his Long Island home on Tuesday at the age of 88.
The longtime educator believed deeply in the school's mission of making a liberal arts education open to everyone, and even as president, he continued to teach classes.
After retiring from NCC, he became an adjunct professor and eventually a dean at Hofstra University, teaching courses in leadership and higher education.
Fanelli is remembered as a devoted husband and nurturing father who practiced kindness. He is survived by his wife, Marion, three children and four grandchildren.
In a statement to News 12, a Nassau Community College spokesperson said, "The college is saddened by the passing of Dr. Sean Fanelli. A dedicated leader for 27 years, he oversaw significant student enrollment growth and was respected by faculty, staff and students alike. He will be deeply missed, and our condolences go out to his family."
Wake services will be held Tuesday, May 19 at Donohue Cecere Funeral Home in Westbury.
Fanelli will then be laid to rest on Wednesday, May 20.
