Long Island MacArthur Airport has been named the No. 1 small airport in the United States in the 2026 USA TODAY 10Best Readers’ Choice Awards.
The annual awards program began with nominations selected by a panel of experts and USA TODAY editors. Readers then voted to determine the final rankings.
Travelers departing MacArthur Airport on Wednesday said the honor comes as no surprise. Many cited the airport’s convenience, including easy drop-offs and pickups, shorter security lines, and a growing number of destinations.
“I’d rather fly out of Islip because there’s a lot less of a wait, the security is really on top of things and I feel very safe when I fly out of here,” one passenger said.
Another traveler said the airport has steadily improved over the years.
“Not really surprised it’s a good airport. I remember when they first built it, and they’ve been improving it ever since.”
Airport officials said the recognition reflects the experience travelers receive compared with larger airports in the region.
Rob Schneider, airport commissioner, credited public support and customer satisfaction for the top ranking.
“We secured the No. 1 spot because we definitely provide a superior customer experience compared to the New York City airports,” Schneider said. “I think all of our customers and the Long Island residents have recognized how amazing this airport is, and they came out and voted for us and supported this airport like none other.”
Airport leaders say the award highlights MacArthur’s continued growth and its reputation as a convenient alternative to New York City-area airports.
