Nassau County Police responded to Mineola Middle School on Wednesday after the discovery of what the district described as a "disturbing message that included the names of other students."
The incident is under investigation, according to the Nassau County Police Department. The department confirmed it responded to the school on Wednesday for a "suspicious incident."
In a letter sent home to district parents, Interim Superintendent Catherine Fishman said the district is working with the NCPD and that its initial assessment has not identified evidence of intent to harm others.
"We are taking this matter seriously, have implemented appropriate safety measures, and will continue working closely with law enforcement as additional information becomes available," Fishman wrote.
Fishman praised the swift action of two students who brought the issue to administrators' attention. The district's security team was notified by administrators and removed the child who wrote the message from class.
Fishman also addressed concerns brought up by parents about the district's response time to the incident.
"I understand that when parents hear about an incident involving their children's safety, they expect timely, accurate information from their school district," she wrote. "While our administrators acted immediately to assess and address the situation, we recognize that law enforcement should have been notified sooner."
Fishman said the district will review its response and identify where procedures can be strengthened during issues in the future.
