Thousands of Long Islanders are without power Sunday morning after severe thunderstorms swept across the region, bringing the strongest impacts to parts of Suffolk County.

As of 11:45 a.m., there are approximately 11,630 power outages on Long Island and in the Rockaways, according to PSEG Long Island.

The utility company said they restored to more than 17,000 customers affected by the storms between Saturday evening and Sunday morning.

PSEG said the storms brought down trees, branches and power lines across the area.

Suffolk County bore the brunt of the severe weather Saturday night, with wind gusts exceeding 70 mph, hail and heavy rainfall, according to the utility.

"Southampton, Hampton Bays, Riverhead and Port Jefferson Station are among the hardest-hit communities," PSEG said.

It said the electrical system has "held up well amid the heat wave over the last few days along with the heavy rain and wind gusts from the severe thunderstorms last night across the service area."

Crews are working 16-hour shifts to restore service as quickly and safely as possible.
