Two men were found Wednesday morning inside a Hempstead home, according to police.
Hempstead police say officers were called to a home on Angevine Avenue around 10:30 a.m.
Officers found two men in the basement with gunshot wounds. Both were pronounced dead at the scene.
A woman told News 12 that the two men were her younger brothers.
“They were the greatest people in the world,” she said. “They took care of my parents. The other one has a very good job. He has a job at the church. They were good people. Very loving people.”
Neighbors say they were shocked to return home to a large police presence and learn that two men had been killed inside a nearby home.
“I’ve never seen anything like that. It’s pretty crazy,” said Lanre Soda, a Hempstead neighbor.
As investigators work to determine what led to the deadly shooting, neighbors are remembering one of the victims for the way he helped people in the community.
Robert Jackson says one of the victims regularly helped neighbors, including during snowstorms.
“When it was snowing and all those bad days, he would really help,” Jackson said. “He had a snowblower and he would do our driveway, his driveway, the neighbor who just recently died and even up the street. He was that kind of guy.”
