The woman who says she was in charge of the dogs that were removed from a Manorhaven building shared her side of the story Sunday night as authorities continue to investigate allegations of animal neglect.

Selma Kazil contacted News 12 Sunday evening after Nassau police announced they were investigating the conditions in which the dogs were found.

"I feel like the animals and I are the victims right now," Kazil said.

Kazil says she was shocked when she learned about the situation.

"My jaw was dropped. I was literally on the phone, like the room was spinning. I'm like, this is a nightmare," she said.

According to Kazil, the dogs had been moved into the building Friday afternoon. She says most of the animals were rescue dogs and that she has worked in animal rescue for a decade.

"I've been in this business for 10 years, and it's so ironic that the minute I leave the state just everything bad happens to me," Kazil said. "But I'm still standing. I want to cry, but I have no more tears left."

Kazil says she left town two weeks ago but left employees in charge of caring for the animals. She says she became alarmed Saturday when she could not reach them.

"I called the police because I wanted those two employees arrested for neglect and abandonment for doing this to the animals. I wanted them to get arrested," she said.

Authorities say animal control officers removed 21 dogs from the building after a passerby looked inside, became concerned about the animals' condition and called police. Kazil says the caller was a fellow animal rescuer who she had reached out to for help.

North Hempstead Town Supervisor Jennifer DeSena says the dogs are now receiving care.

"Our personnel, who are so great and compassionate, love the animals," DeSena said. "They did an intake of all 21 dogs. So they are safe now in our animal shelter. They're being given food and water and being cleaned and given medical attention as needed."

Kazil disputes some investigative findings. She says there were only 17 dogs inside the building, with two being boarded, some awaiting adoption or transfer to rescue organizations, and others scheduled to be transported to her within two weeks.

She also maintains the animals were healthy, except for one dog that was taking medication.

Investigators, however, say some of the dogs appeared malnourished and lacked access to adequate food and water.

Nassau police, Port Washington police and the Nassau County District Attorney's Office are all involved in the case.

No charges had been announced as of Sunday night.
