Americano Pizza Shop in Syosset is raising money for Making Strides of Long Island throughout Breast Cancer Awareness Month, with the restaurant donating a portion of pizza sales and offering additional ways for customers to contribute.
Owner Vinny Corrao said the pizzeria will donate $5 from every pie sold on Tuesdays during October. The shop has also set up a donation jar at the register, created an online donation link and launched a football squares fundraiser centered around the Nov. 1 New York Jets-Las Vegas Raiders game. Corrao said $2,500 from the football squares pool will be donated directly to the cause, while another $2,500 will go to the winner.
“I personally haven't been [affected] by breast cancer, but it's more of just using my platform to give back to everyone,” Corrao said. “We're trying to just help people. We have a platform and we've got to give back.”
The pizzeria, which opened about eight months ago, has previously participated in community fundraising efforts, including Pizza Strong events. Corrao said the positive response from customers has encouraged the business to continue supporting charitable causes year-round.
“This isn't the only fundraiser we're going to do,” he said. “We're going to be doing other things for Christmas gifts for kids, the less fortunate, anything all year long.”
Corrao said community support has been a driving force behind the shop's charitable efforts, with customers often contributing beyond the advertised fundraisers.
“They would try to donate on top of it, or they're saying, I'm here for the fundraiser,” he said. “It feels good knowing that it's working.”
