The Long Beach City Council voted to ban electric bicycles, motorized scooters and electric scooters from its boardwalk, beach and sidewalks.
The updated ordinance, which went into effect immediately, limits where these electric vehicles can be ridden and comes with stricter penalties for improperly riding in the city.
The new ordinance comes with fines up to $500 or up to 15 days in jail.
Long Beach, particularly the boardwalk, is known for being a bike-friendly city, so this law has divided many in the community.
Some people said they support the ban over safety concerns about reckless riding and injury risks. Others said the bikes and scooters are an effective, non-car mode of transportation when used properly.
The new law does not impact regular bicycles on the boardwalk, which are still allowed in the designated center lane.
