A 19-year-old from Wyandanch is facing attempted murder and other charges after authorities say he shot towards a Long Island Rail Road train leaving Bellport on Friday, injuring both a teen he allegedly targeted and an uninvolved bystander.
MTA officials released new details about the incident during a press conference on Wednesday, preliminarily saying the shooting stems from an ongoing dispute over a female.
Authorities say Jahmez Cureton was part of a group of four people getting off the train when he walked back and fired one round toward a 17-year-old exiting the train, according to the officials.
Officials say the bullet tore through the 17-year-old's body before striking a 40-year-old bystander in the shoulder who had no connection to the dispute.
Authorities say the 17-year-old fled the station and was later found by police with the untreated bullet wound. He was arrested for an open warrant for an unrelated charge.
The bystander, identified in court documents as Abdul Willet, of North Bellport, fell back into the train and was aided at the Mastic-Shirley stop. He was also taken into custody for an unrelated warrant.
Cureton was arrested on Tuesday and charged with attempted murder, two counts of assault and criminal possession of a weapon.
MTA officials said all parties are known to the MTA through previous criminal interactions.
