A Center Moriches student-athlete was taken to the hospital after being bitten by an unleashed dog during track and field practice Monday, and now police are searching for the dog's owner.
The team was practicing behind the high school when a woman went into the area with "an illegally unleashed dog," according to Ricardo Soto, the superintendent of schools.
The district says the dog bit the student without provocation and when school personnel attempted to speak with the dog's owner, she picked up the dog and left the scene without providing any identifying information.
Suffolk County police were alerted to the incident, as well as the student's parents. The student was taken to Stony Brook University Hospital for evaluation.
The district says it is cooperating with authorities as they work to identify the dog owner.
It also says they are "reviewing the circumstances surrounding this incident, as well as our signage and security protocols, and will consider any additional measures that may help prevent a similar situation from occurring in the future."
Anyone with information on the attack is asked to contact police.
